Witness Observations
Witnesses observed the airplane making power changes during level flight at an estimated altitude between 1,500 and 2,000 feet above ground level. Shortly thereafter, they reported hearing changes in engine sounds and saw the airplane enter a right-hand spin. The airplane collided with trees and terrain soon after entering the spin.
Investigation Findings
An on-scene investigation revealed continuity in the powerplant, powerplant controls, and flight controls. No pre-impact mechanical anomalies were identified from the examination of these systems.
Pilot Seating Arrangement
According to the airplane's owner, the student pilot had to sit on a seat cushion to see through the windshield. The owner also stated that the student's feet were not able to fully touch the rudder pedals.
