What happened
The accident occurred while a student pilot was conducting practice touch-and-go landing operations. During the rollout phase of one such landing, the airplane began to drift toward the right side of the runway. In an attempt to correct this lateral deviation, the student applied left rudder input. However, during this maneuver, his foot became caught on the heel brake mechanism.
With directional control compromised, the aircraft departed the runway surface to the left. As the pilot attempted to regain control and return the airplane to the paved surface, it struck a ditch located adjacent to the runway. The impact resulted in a nose-over attitude for the aircraft.
