Event Details
During a night FLIR (Forward Looking Infrared) training operation, the helicopter was maneuvering when it descended below the planned maneuvering altitude and inadvertently contacted the terrain. The pilot's reaction to this unintended touchdown was described as an abrupt recovery.
Witness Observations
According to witnesses, the pilot initiated an abrupt recovery with a steep right turn, which caused the helicopter to enter the trees. Subsequently, the helicopter rolled inverted and impacted the terrain.
Investigation Findings
The investigation found no mechanical failure or malfunction of the airframe, powerplant, or flight controls. The helicopter's descent below the planned altitude and subsequent contact with terrain were not attributed to any mechanical issues.
