Flight Plan and Diversion
The pilot had planned a flight from Dallas, Texas, to Wheeling, Illinois, with an intended fuel stop in Bloomington, Illinois. While en route, upon reaching the St. Louis, Missouri, area, the pilot requested to land at a nearby airport.
Loss of Engine Power
Approximately two miles from the airport, a total loss of engine power occurred. The airplane subsequently contacted trees and came to rest in an inverted position.
Post-Accident Inspection
Following the accident, an inspection of the airplane revealed only a small amount of residual fuel on board.
Pilot Report on Fuel Gauges
The pilot reported being aware that the fuel quantity gauge for the right tank was unreliable. Additionally, the left tank gauge indicated over one half tank at the time the loss of power occurred.
