Accident Overview
The accident involved a takeoff and climb to 2,220 feet MSL following engine pre-heating and a pre-flight inspection that revealed no discrepancies or contaminated fuel.
Sequence of Events
Approximately 30 seconds after selecting cruise power, the engine experienced a partial loss of power. The pilot was able to keep the engine 'barely alive' by using the auxiliary fuel pump, but full power could not be restored despite completing the emergency checklist. A forced landing was initiated in a wooded area, during which the airplane struck trees.
Post-Accident Examination
An examination of the airframe and engine did not reveal any pre-impact discrepancies that would have led to the partial power loss. Fuel was found in the gascolator. All spark plug leads were observed to be black and worn.
Additional Findings
The temperature at the time of the accident was zero degrees. The airport fuel supply was tested with no discrepancies noted. The engine had a history of high oil consumption.
