An airplane bounced three times during landing, then stalled during a go-around and struck a building. The flaps were found retracted post-impact, contrary to recommended procedures. The aircraft was slightly overweight.

Accident Sequence

During a landing attempt, the airplane bounced three times, with the nose wheel contacting the runway before the main landing gear. After the third bounce, which occurred over halfway down the 2,610-foot-long runway, the pilot initiated a climb. Witnesses reported that the airplane's flaps were extended during the aborted landing.

After beginning to climb, the airplane entered a shallow left turn and reached about 50 feet above ground level (AGL). During the climb, the airplane stalled and impacted a 30-foot-high building located approximately one-quarter mile beyond the departure end of the runway.

Post-Accident Examination

Examination of the airframe revealed that the flaps were retracted and the landing gear was extended. No anomalies were found with the airframe or engine. At the time of the accident, the airplane was about 77.5 pounds over its maximum allowable gross weight.

Balked Landing Procedures

According to the Beechcraft Balked Landing Procedures, the landing gear should be retracted after full throttle is applied. The flaps should not be retracted until the airplane is clear of obstacles and trimmed for best rate of climb.
