A pilot experienced high cylinder head temperature in the right engine the day before the accident. On the accident flight, witnesses observed the left engine not operating and the right engine losing power before the aircraft struck trees.

Background

The day before the accident, one of the owners experienced high cylinder head temperature in the right engine during takeoff. He returned to the airport and shut the engine down during taxi-in. This was the second flight since the annual inspection. He reported this issue to the other owner, who was the pilot and stated he would look at the aircraft.

Accident Flight

On the day of the accident, the pilot was observed looking at something under the instrument panel before departing. The aircraft was then observed making a downwind approach to another airport and executing a go-around. During the approach, the landing gear remained down and the flaps were raised to the approach position. An engine was heard to lose power, and witnesses observed the left engine not operating but the propeller turning, while the right engine was producing full power. Shortly after, the right engine was heard to slow down, and the aircraft descended and struck trees.

Investigation

Post-accident examination revealed that the right propeller was found in the feathered position. No evidence of precrash mechanical failure or malfunction of either engine or propeller was found.
