During the return leg of an extended cross-country flight, the pilot observed that the fuel gauges were indicating decreasing fuel levels when the aircraft was approximately 70 miles north of his home airport. The pilot requested air traffic control (ATC) to divert the flight to a closer airport. While communicating with ATC, the engine stopped running, and the pilot subsequently ditched the aircraft into a lake. After reporting the engine failure to ATC, the controller asked how much fuel remained. The pilot replied, 'Yeah looks like we're empty sir.'
