Incident Overview
The pilot, who had accumulated approximately 27,000 hours of flight experience, reported that the helicopter began rotating counterclockwise around its vertical axis just prior to the crash. In an attempt to rescue his logging crew after the imminent impact, he tried to maneuver the aircraft. However, he recalled that the pedals would not move, or that the left pedal appeared to be stuck.
Post-Crash Inspection
Following the accident, a thorough examination of the aircraft was conducted. The post-crash inspection of the helicopter, as well as component inspection and disassembly, found no evidence of any mechanical deficiency. This included checks of all relevant systems and components that could have contributed to the reported pedal issue.
Pilot's Account
The pilot's recollection focused on the unresponsive pedals during the final moments of flight. He noted the rotation and his inability to correct it due to the pedal condition. Despite the high number of flight hours, the pilot was unable to regain control before the crash.
Investigation Results
Investigators did not identify any mechanical failure or malfunction that could explain the reported pedal sticking or the aircraft's rotation. The absence of such evidence leaves the cause of the loss of control undetermined based on available physical evidence.
