After draining water from fuel sumps, a pilot took off but the engine quit at 200 ft AGL. The aircraft force-landed into trees. Post-accident inspection found water in fuel tanks and carburetor bowl.

Accident Sequence

Following refueling, the pilot checked the fuel sumps and observed a significant amount of water in the fuel. The pilot then shook the wings and rechecked the sumps, again finding water. After allowing the aircraft to sit for approximately one hour, the pilot drained water from the sumps until no further water was visible. During the initial climb at about 200 feet above ground level (AGL), the engine stopped. The pilot executed a forced landing, during which the aircraft collided with trees.

Post-Accident Inspection

A post-accident examination revealed evidence of water in the fuel tanks and carburetor bowl. The fuel supply at the fixed-base operator (FBO) was tested, and no contamination was detected.
