Event Overview
The pilot of an airplane reported experiencing a total loss of engine power while attempting a third short/soft field takeoff from a 3,220-foot turf runway. The power loss occurred at an estimated altitude of 15 to 20 feet above ground level (AGL). In response, the pilot decided to land straight ahead. However, just prior to touchdown, the engine regained power. The airplane then flew a short distance before contacting the ground and subsequently striking a fence.
Postaccident Examination
Following the accident, an inspection of the airplane was conducted. No evidence of any preimpact mechanical anomalies was found. Additionally, an ample quantity of visually uncontaminated fuel remained aboard the airplane after the accident.
Previous Incident
According to the operator and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the same airplane had experienced a previous unexplained loss of engine power. That incident resulted in a successful off-airport landing without damage to the airplane or injury to its occupants.
