A pilot performed a forced landing after engine power loss preceded by an electrical burning smell. Investigation found heat-damaged magneto ignition harnesses with multiple shorted leads.

Event Description

A pilot experienced a loss of engine power during a cruise climb, passing through 7,000 feet for 10,000 feet. The power loss was preceded by an electrical 'burning' smell. The pilot successfully restarted the engine, but the power loss recurred.

During the subsequent forced landing, the pilot flew under power lines and intentionally stalled the airplane to avoid a house. The aircraft landed in a watermelon patch, where the landing gear collapsed and the left wing sustained damage.

Examination Findings

Examination of the airplane revealed that the right and left magneto ignition harnesses were damaged by heat. A continuity check of the harnesses showed that all but four of the wire leads were shorted. The examination did not disclose a heat source external to the harness.
