Accident Sequence
The pilot had flown the airplane for approximately one hour before landing to refuel. After refueling, the pilot drained the fuel sumps, reporting that about one cup of water was removed from each fuel tank. Shortly after departing the airport, the airplane's engine stopped running. The pilot stated that he intended to land the airplane on a four-lane highway, but during the approach, the airplane collided with powerlines.
Post-Accident Investigation
An on-scene investigation revealed traces of water in the carburetor accelerator pump well and float chamber. The engine sustained damage that prevented it from being test run. Investigators found no evidence of pre-collision mechanical failure.
