Flight and Preflight
The pilot and her husband flew the airplane from one airport to another on the morning of the accident. Later that afternoon, the pilot conducted another preflight inspection of the airplane before departing on a solo flight.
Loss of Engine Power
During the climb out, approximately 150 feet above ground level, the engine abruptly lost all power. The pilot reported that there was no preliminary sputtering or warning before the power loss.
Forced Landing
The pilot attempted a forced landing to an open field. During the descent, the airplane struck trees.
Investigation Findings
Examination of the airplane after the accident revealed that water had been found in the fuel system on at least one occasion during the two months preceding the accident. Further inspection of the engine disclosed the presence of water and rust in both the fuel pump and the carburetor.
