What happened
On the evening of the accident, witnesses located approximately one mile from the airport observed an aircraft impacting trees. The aircraft was traveling at a high rate of speed and was in an estimated 15-degree descent at the time of impact. Following the collision with the trees, the wreckage path continued for approximately 405 feet into an open field.
At the time of the accident, witnesses reported weather conditions consisting of an overcast sky with a ceiling of approximately 500 feet and reduced visibility due to fog.
A relative of the student pilot reported that the pilot had been at her residence until 2342 on the night of the accident. According to this witness, the pilot had been drinking prior to arriving at her home and consumed one beer while present. Upon leaving her residence, the pilot stated his intention was to travel to his own home.
