A pilot attempting a crosswind landing on Runway 20 veered left of centerline, struck a snow bank, and nosed over. The pilot reported strong gusty winds and stated he did not use ailerons for ground directional control.

Incident Details

A pilot intended to land on Runway 27 at Dayton General Airport, but that runway was not equipped with lights. Determining it was too dark, the pilot elected to land on Runway 20. During touchdown, the airplane touched down left of the centerline, veered off the left side of the runway, struck a snow bank, and nosed over.

Pilot Report

The pilot reported that winds were 10 knots gusting to 30 knots from 260 degrees. He stated that he did not use the ailerons for directional control on the ground because they are only effective in flight.

Operational Information

A crosswind component chart for the flight conditions indicated a maximum crosswind of 26 knots. The Pilot Operating Handbook listed a maximum demonstrated crosswind velocity for takeoff or landing as 21 knots. The Flight Training Handbook (AC61-21A) notes that during the after-landing roll, special attention must be given to maintaining directional control while using aileron to keep the upwind wing from rising.
