Incident Overview
The pilot of a single-engine aircraft reported that after fueling the aircraft, he flew for 1.5 hours. He then added 3 gallons of fuel and intended to fly to Crystal Springs, approximately 25 nautical miles away, to refuel. While approaching Crystal Springs, the engine began to surge and lose power.
Forced Landing
The pilot executed a forced landing in a field, during which the aircraft nosed over.
Post-Accident Examination
FAA inspectors examined the aircraft and found no usable fuel in the aircraft fuel system. There was no evidence of pre- or post-crash fuel leakage from the aircraft. The carburetor contained only 1.5 ounces of fuel and 3 cubic centimeters of water.
