Incident Overview
A certificated commercial pilot and flight instructor was receiving an airplane checkout from the owner/pilot prior to renting the aircraft. As part of the training, the owner reduced engine power to idle to simulate an engine failure and forced landing. The pilot receiving checkout maneuvered the airplane toward a prospective landing area and descended to an altitude between 300 and 500 feet above ground level. At that point, the pilot initiated a go-around and advanced the throttle to begin a climb. However, the engine did not respond to the throttle input. Both pilots attempted emergency procedures, but these did not restore engine power.
Collision and Examination
The airplane continued to descend and ultimately collided with trees. A postaccident examination of the engine revealed that the engine-driven fuel pump had failed. No further causes or contributing factors were identified in the source.
