Sequence of Events
The pilot entered the traffic pattern shortly after sunset. To maintain spacing with two preceding aircraft, he extended his downwind leg. He then turned base at a point farther from the runway than usual when no other traffic was ahead. Rather than delaying his descent during the extended pattern, the pilot began to descend while turning base. This resulted in the aircraft being lower than normal on final approach.
Collision and Impact
Approximately 1,760 feet from the runway threshold, the right wing of the aircraft struck a tree. After the tree impact, the aircraft's flight path changed abruptly, turning about 90 degrees to the right. It then flew approximately 220 feet before impacting the roof of a private residence.
