What happened
The pilot reported that the aircraft accelerated normally along the packed snow surface during the takeoff roll. However, as the plane reached the end of the usable landing area on the Kahiltina Glacier, it encountered a section of snow that had become unusually sticky. The left ski dug into this consolidated layer, causing the nose to pitch down abruptly and the aircraft to nosed over.
Findings
The pilot noted that other aircraft of the same model and loading configuration had successfully taken off from the exact same location throughout the day. This consistency in operations suggested that the issue was not related to the aircraft's performance or weight distribution. Instead, the pilot attributed the incident to a change in snow conditions, specifically believing that an increase in temperature caused the snow to become sticky enough to impede the ski.
