A student pilot touched down too high and fast, then exited the runway to avoid running out of pavement, striking a fence.

What happened

During the final phase of flight, the aircraft was on approach when the student pilot recognized that the descent profile was not optimal. The pilot described the situation as being too high and too fast for a safe landing. Despite this assessment, the airplane touched down at midfield on the runway.

As the aircraft decelerated, the pilot realized that the remaining length of the 4,183-foot runway would be insufficient to bring the airplane to a complete stop. To prevent overrunning the end of the paved surface, the pilot made the decision to steer the aircraft off the right side of the runway.

The airplane crossed a taxiway and subsequently impacted a fence located just beyond the runway edge.

Probable cause

The student pilot's failure to maintain proper airspeed and descent profile during approach, resulting in a high-speed touchdown and subsequent runway overrun.
