What happened
The incident occurred during the takeoff phase of an aerial application flight. The pilot was operating an aircraft loaded with fertilizer and fuel on a remarkably short airstrip measuring only 1,800 feet in length. Environmental conditions significantly reduced the available performance; the runway surface was described as soft and wet, which likely increased rolling resistance and reduced tire traction.
As the aircraft accelerated down the available pavement, it failed to attain the necessary airspeed for flight within the remaining distance of the strip. Consequently, the airplane continued beyond the end of the paved or prepared surface. The aircraft impacted vegetation consisting of bushes and small trees located just past the runway threshold. The impact forces caused the aircraft to flip over, coming to rest in an inverted position.
The investigation
Examination of the circumstances revealed that the primary mechanical limitation was the weight of the load. The airplane was overloaded with both fertilizer payload and fuel at the time of takeoff. This excessive gross weight meant that the acceleration rate was insufficient to achieve rotation speed before the end of the 1,800-foot runway. The combination of the short field length, the soft and wet surface conditions, and the overweight condition created an unrecoverable situation during the critical takeoff roll.
Findings
The accident was caused by the pilot's decision to attempt a takeoff from a short, adverse-surface airstrip with an aircraft that exceeded its safe operating weight limits. The overload prevented the airplane from achieving flying speed within the available runway distance, leading directly to the overrun and subsequent impact with terrain obstacles.
