An airplane struck a power transmission line ground wire during a simulated engine failure demonstration and returned to the airport with minor wing damage.

Incident Details

During a flight with a passenger, the pilot of an airplane demonstrated what would happen if the engine were to quit. The pilot performed a simulated emergency landing next to his place of employment. Unbeknownst to the pilot, the airplane struck the ground wire of electrical power transmission lines during the demonstration. The airplane was returned to the airport without further incident. After the pilot had departed the airport, the airplane was discovered to have its left wing bent aft by 1 to 1½ inches. The pilot stated he had not realized the airplane had hit a wire during the demonstration.

Investigation Findings

An on-scene investigation revealed an open field next to the pilot's place of employment that measured 100 feet by 200 feet. The airplane sustained damage to the left wing structure. The pilot and passenger reported that the simulated emergency landing was conducted in that field.
