What happened
The aircraft was operating from a narrow grass runway that measured 75 feet in width. The airfield environment presented significant visual and physical constraints, as the runway was flanked on both sides by mature corn stalks standing approximately 7 feet tall. At the time of the incident, the grass surface within the takeoff path was estimated to be between 4 and 6 inches in height, creating substantial rolling resistance.
During the initial phase of the takeoff ground roll, the pilot determined that the aircraft was not accelerating adequately for a safe departure. Consequently, the decision was made to abort the takeoff procedure. As the deceleration process commenced, the airplane began to veer toward the left side of the runway. This lateral deviation resulted in the left wing making contact with the adjacent cornfield vegetation.
The aircraft eventually came to a complete stop following the collision. The impact forces sustained during the ground loop and subsequent vegetation strike caused significant structural damage to the airframe. Specifically, the right main landing gear separated from the fuselage upon cessation of movement. The pilot survived the incident without reported injuries, though the aircraft sustained substantial damage requiring extensive repair.
The investigation
Examination of the wreckage revealed that the primary damage was concentrated on the left wing structure and the right main landing gear assembly. The separation of the right main gear indicated high-stress loading during the abort sequence. The surrounding cornfield showed clear signs of impact consistent with the aircraft's trajectory toward the left boundary.
