Incident Overview
While maneuvering over mountainous terrain at approximately 500 feet above ground level, the airplane passed over a ridge line and then descended into a canyon. According to the pilot, a severe downdraft jolted the airplane, and the engine subsequently lost power. The pilot attempted to restart the engine but was unsuccessful. Additionally, the landing gear could not be locked into the down position.
Forced Landing
Due to the loss of engine power and inability to restart, the pilot executed a forced landing to an open, rough field. During the landing roll, the airplane collided with the terrain.
Examination Findings
An examination of the wreckage revealed a trace of water contamination in the fuel system. No evidence was found to indicate a mechanical failure or malfunction.
