Background
According to the pilot, the airplane was loaded to within one pound of its maximum gross weight and remained within the center of gravity envelope for takeoff. The pilot estimated the weights of passengers, baggage, and fuel prior to departure.
Takeoff Sequence
During the takeoff ground roll, the pilot deliberately kept the airplane on the runway to build additional ground speed before rotating. After rotation, the pilot maintained the airplane in ground effect to increase airspeed before initiating a climb.
During the climb, the pilot noted that the airplane felt 'sluggish' and that the stall warning light illuminated each time the angle of attack was increased. Due to the dark night conditions, the pilot was uncertain whether the airplane would clear the terrain and obstructions beyond the departure end of the runway.
Impact and Landing
Shortly after, the landing gear collided with treetops. The pilot then reduced engine power and executed a landing in small trees and high brush.
Mechanical Status
The pilot reported that there were no mechanical failures or malfunctions with the airplane at the time of the accident.
