What happened
The pilot was operating the aircraft and initiated a descent. During this phase, he applied carburetor heat as a preventive measure. However, before attempting to increase engine power for the approach or climb-out, the pilot removed the carburetor heat setting.
Immediately after removing the heat and attempting to add power, the engine failed to respond. The pilot was unable to restore engine power through any available means. Consequently, he executed a forced landing in a crop field located approximately 300 feet west of the intended runway.
Findings
The pilot stated that he believed the loss of power resulted from carburetor ice. The sequence of events suggests that ice had accumulated in the carburetor while heat was applied, and its subsequent melting or shifting upon removal of the heat may have obstructed fuel flow or airflow, leading to the sudden failure. No mechanical examination is detailed in this brief report.
