Aircraft veers off runway during braking after touchdown

Casualties unknown • Dayton, TN, US

An aircraft veered off the left side of runway 03 and came to rest in a grassy area after the pilot applied brakes following touchdown.

What happened

Following touchdown on runway 03, the pilot applied the brakes to decelerate the aircraft. Immediately upon application of the brakes, the aircraft began a sharp turn to the left. In an attempt to correct the direction, the pilot applied full right rudder, aileron, and right brake; however, these inputs failed to arrest the turn. The pilot then applied full engine power to try and regain directional control, but the aircraft continued its course.

The aircraft subsequently veered off the left side of the runway, traveling down a slight incline and across a shallow ditch. The aircraft eventually came to a stop in a grassy area located just west of the parallel taxiway. The pilot was not injured.

The investigation

A mechanical inspection of the aircraft was conducted following the excursion. The investigation revealed that both the left and right tires were fully inflated. Additionally, the inspection confirmed that the left and right brakes rotated freely.
