What happened
On a recreational flight consisting of three legs, the pilot departed Snohomish at 1630. The aircraft's total fuel capacity was reported as 60 gallons, which exceeded the standard 50-gallon capacity for this type of aircraft. During the flight, the pilot first landed at Quillayute and subsequently at Hoquiam.
Prior to departing from Hoquiam, the pilot performed a fuel dip and estimated that one wing tank contained approximately 1/3 tank of fuel, while the other wing tank contained nearly 1/3 tank. While in the cruise phase of flight approaching the final destination, the engine lost power. In response to the loss of power, the pilot performed an offshore ditching.
The aircraft was recovered on October 1, 1995. The trip log associated with the flight was never recovered.
