What happened
The pilot was operating the aircraft under conditions that included significant gusty crosswinds. The intended landing site was not a standard runway but rather the remnants of an old road. During the final phase of the approach and subsequent landing roll, the wind conditions became unstable.
A sudden wind gust disrupted the aircraft's stability on the ground. This loss of aerodynamic control resulted in the left main wheel leaving the paved surface of the road. The gear then entered an adjoining marsh area adjacent to the road.
While traversing the marsh, the landing gear struck a log. The impact with this obstacle caused the nose of the airplane to pitch forward violently. The aircraft came to rest after nosing over, ending the flight in a damaged state.
The investigation
The investigation focused on the mechanical and environmental factors present during the accident sequence. Examination of the site confirmed that the left main landing gear had departed the road surface and entered the marsh. The presence of a log in the marsh was identified as a significant obstacle encountered by the landing gear.
No evidence of pre-impact mechanical failure was reported. The primary factor identified was the loss of directional control during the landing roll, directly attributed to the gusty crosswind conditions affecting the aircraft while on the non-standard landing surface.
