A pilot landed on runway 18 with a tailwind after being unable to determine wind direction. The aircraft touched down long, overran the runway, and nosed over. The pilot later discovered the CTAF publication was outdated.

Accident Overview

After arriving over the airport, the pilot attempted to obtain an airport advisory by using the common traffic advisory frequency (CTAF) from a flight information publication in his possession. He was unsuccessful. Following the accident, he noticed the publication was out of date and did not contain the correct CTAF.

Unable to determine the wind direction, the pilot elected to land on runway 18. During the landing roll, he could not stop the aircraft on the remaining runway. The airplane overran the departure end, encountered a rough surface, and nosed over. The pilot reported that after the accident, he realized he had unknowingly landed downwind with a 15-knot tailwind.

Witness Observations

Ground witnesses reported that the aircraft appeared very fast during the approach and touched down approximately 1,000 feet down the 2,160-foot-long runway. They also stated that winds had been steady from the north at 10 to 15 knots all morning.
