Incident Overview
A flight instructor reported that a student pilot was occupying the left seat and handling the controls during a landing approach. The left engine was set to idle to simulate zero thrust. The student pilot flared the aircraft too high above the runway, prompting the instructor to call for a go-around.
Go-Around and Loss of Control
When the student pilot advanced the power on the right engine, the aircraft yawed approximately 30 degrees to the left. The flight instructor then took control of the aircraft and reduced both engines to idle. The aircraft veered off the runway to the left, about 5,000 feet from the landing threshold.
Ground Impact
The aircraft landed in a grassy area adjacent to the runway. During the excursion, the right wing struck a distance remaining marker approximately 3 feet inboard from the wing tip. The flight instructor regained control and brought the aircraft to a stop in the grass.
