Event Details
An airplane landed to the left of the runway centerline at Grand Canyon Airport and collapsed its landing gear as it slid sideways. According to airport personnel, a light ice buildup was observed on the leading edges of the airframe. The pilot reported operating the deice boots just prior to landing.
Weather Conditions
The pilot obtained preflight weather information from DUAT, ASOS, and the Grand Canyon tower. The weather was reported to be above landing minimums and forecast to remain above. The operator stated that the ASOS had not been reliable for the last three months. Approaching Grand Canyon, the pilot received ATIS information 'Juliet', which reported 1,200 scattered clouds with visibility of 3/4 miles. According to the FAA, ATIS 'Juliet' issued 50 minutes before the accident indicated a measured ceiling of 1,300 feet broken, 3,000 feet overcast, visibility 3/4 mile in fog, temperature 23°F, dew point 21°F, calm wind, and altimeter 30.03 inHg. At the time of the accident, the ASOS reported an indefinite ceiling of 400 feet overcast with visibility 1/4 mile in fog and snow. The ILS approach requires a minimum ceiling of 200 feet and visibility of 1/2 mile.

Braking action was reported as poor due to snow and ice on the runway.
