Flight and Power Loss
The accident occurred during a night cross-country flight. While in flight, the engine suddenly ceased to produce power. The pilot was forced to make an emergency landing. The touchdown was characterized by a heavy vertical impact.
Post-Accident Investigation
Following the accident, a detailed examination of the aircraft was conducted. The fuel selector valve was found in the position corresponding to the right fuel tank. The right wing tank was empty, while the left wing tank contained approximately 9 gallons of fuel. The pilot reported that he was operating on the right tank when the power loss happened. He then switched to the left tank and attempted to restart the engine multiple times; however, the engine did not restart.
Ignition System Findings
All twelve spark plugs were removed and inspected. They were found to have excessive gap. Two spark plugs were tested under pressure; they failed to fire at pressures exceeding 40 PSI. Properly maintained spark plugs with correct gap settings should fire consistently when subjected to pressures up to 115 to 135 PSI, according to standard specifications.
