Loss of Engine Power
During the initial climbout from an uncontrolled airport, the airplane experienced a loss of engine power. According to air traffic control (ATC) recordings, the aircraft had reached approximately 5,300 feet mean sea level and had completed a right 180-degree turn heading back toward the departure airport. At that time, the pilot contacted the air traffic controller, reporting the loss of engine power and requesting assistance to the nearest airport.
Attempts to Reach Alternate Airport
The controller provided a heading to the nearest airport, prompting the pilot to execute another right 180-degree turn. After turning to the assigned heading, the pilot determined that the aircraft could not reach that airport. Consequently, the pilot performed a left 180-degree turn and announced an intention to attempt a landing on a busy interstate highway.
Highway Landing and Collision
Evidence from ground scarring and tree damage indicates that the airplane impacted the northbound lane of the highway at approximately a 60-degree angle. The aircraft's momentum carried it across a gully and into the southbound lanes. There, the airplane struck a southbound vehicle with its left wing. The aircraft then spun to a stop in the middle of the highway and burst into flames.
