What happened
The pilot provided a written statement describing the events leading up to the accident. During the final approach, the aircraft was maintained at an airspeed of 70 knots. Upon initial contact with the runway surface, the airplane bounced upward to a considerable height.
During the recovery phase, the pilot allowed the aircraft to sink before attempting to flare for the second touchdown. On this subsequent landing impact, the nose gear collapsed. The propeller struck the runway surface, and the nose of the airplane sustained substantial damage.
The investigation
A physical examination of the aircraft was conducted to determine the cause of the structural failure. Investigators found no evidence of any pre-impact mechanical malfunction that would have contributed to the accident.
