Accident Details

The pilot reported that during preparation for landing, the airplane crossed over the airport at an altitude between 200 and 400 feet. The engine began to sputter and lose power. The pilot verified that the fuel selector was positioned to the right fuel tank, as the left fuel tank was empty. The pilot also checked that the carburetor heat was engaged and the magnetos were set to both. Despite these actions, the engine continued to sputter.

The pilot selected an open field as an emergency landing area but was unable to reach it. The airplane collided with trees during the final approach and subsequently crashed.

Pilot Report

According to the pilot, before descending, the fuel gauge indicated that the right tank contained between one-quarter and one-half full. The pilot stated that the fuel tanks had been topped off prior to the flight, and the flight duration was approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes when the engine lost power. The pilot estimated that the airplane should have been capable of flying at least 3.5 hours after being fully serviced.

After the accident, the pilot reported that the fire department placed a bucket under the wing to collect leaking fuel. Approximately 2 to 2.5 gallons of fuel were recovered, but fuel had been leaking for 40 to 60 minutes before collection.

Post-Accident Examination

The engine assembly was removed from the airframe and installed in an engine test stand. When started, the engine operated normally and developed power.
