Accident Summary
On final approach to the airport, the pilot experienced a total loss of engine power. The aircraft subsequently crashed into rough terrain adjacent to the airport. The impact caused substantial damage to the aircraft.
Findings
After the accident, investigators examined the wreckage. The airplane's fuel selector was found positioned to the right fuel tank. No fuel was observed in the right tank, while approximately 22.5 gallons of fuel was found in the left fuel tank. The engine was successfully test run following the accident, and no evidence of preimpact malfunctions was observed.
Maintenance and Pilot Records
Maintenance records indicated that the airplane's last annual inspection was performed over two years earlier. The pilot's last biennial flight review was accomplished over three and a half years earlier.
Conclusion
The investigation determined that the loss of engine power was due to fuel starvation resulting from the fuel selector being positioned to an empty tank. The lapsed annual inspection and flight review were noted but not linked causally to the accident.
