Incident
On September 5, 1996, FedEx Express Flight 1406, a McDonnell Douglas DC-10, was operating as a domestic cargo flight from Memphis International Airport, Memphis, Tennessee, to Logan International Airport in Boston, Massachusetts. Over New York, an in-flight cargo fire broke out. The aircraft diverted to Stewart International Airport in Newburgh, New York, for an emergency landing.
Evacuation
The three crew members and two passengers on board successfully evacuated the aircraft after landing. Following the evacuation, the DC-10 was consumed by fire.
Investigation
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) conducted an extensive investigation but could not determine the cause of the fire. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) subsequently issued recommendations aimed at preventing similar incidents in the future.
