Accident Summary
A single-engine floatplane experienced a complete loss of engine power while crossing Knik Arm. The pilot, who reported having approximately 4.5 hours of fuel on board at departure, was attempting to conserve fuel by operating at a reduced power setting. The flight time was expected to be close to the airplane's fuel endurance limits. As the engine began to sputter, the pilot applied carburetor heat, which resulted in a slight improvement in engine RPM. Shortly thereafter, the engine lost all power.
Pilot Account
The pilot stated that he tried to land on the water but was unable to reach a suitable area. He ultimately landed on mud flats. During the landing, the right float struck a gully, causing the float strut to collapse. The airplane then dragged the right wing and elevator across the terrain, sustaining damage.
Post-Accident Inspection
While repairing the airplane after the accident, a mechanic discovered that the fuel sight tubes indicated a greater quantity of fuel than was actually available. This discrepancy may have contributed to the pilot's assessment of fuel remaining, though the report does not establish a direct causal link.
