Accident Sequence
The airplane was climbing after departure when the engine lost power. The pilot subsequently executed a forced landing, during which the airplane sustained damage.
Examination Findings
Postaccident examination of the engine disclosed a failure of the piston in the #2 cylinder. The #2 piston crown exhibited severe erosion over approximately 80 percent of its circumference. Additionally, erosion, scoring, and metal transfer were evident on the piston skirts. Prior to removal of the #2 cylinder, heat discoloration was observed on the cylinder base.
A report from the engine manufacturer concluded that the failure resulted from detonation/preignition.
Component Testing
The entire fuel system, both magnetos, and the turbo controller were functionally tested at their respective manufacturer facilities. All tested components met FAA-approved test data.
