Incident Overview
During the landing rollout on runway 16R, the aircraft unexpectedly veered to the left shortly after touchdown. The pilot applied right rudder input in an attempt to correct the deviation, but the aircraft did not respond. It continued left, departing the runway surface onto adjacent grass, and struck a runway sign before coming to a stop.
Pilot Report
The pilot stated that there were no apparent mechanical problems with the aircraft and that weather conditions were not a factor in the event. He noted that immediately after touchdown, the aircraft veered left, and despite his input of right rudder, no directional control was regained.
Aircraft Examination
An FAA airworthiness inspector examined the aircraft following the incident. The inspection revealed that the brakes were in normal condition with adequate life remaining on the linings. Both brakes functioned properly when the brake pedals were depressed. Additionally, the nose gear steering mechanism was found to be intact and operating as intended. No mechanical anomalies were identified that could explain the loss of directional control.
