Narrative
The pilot reported that the engine began losing power approximately 150 feet above ground level (AGL) during the initial climb after takeoff. He initiated a left crosswind turn to enter a closed traffic pattern and land. However, as the turn progressed, airspeed decreased and the airplane could not sustain altitude. The pilot characterized the power loss as partial. He then executed a forced landing straight ahead, during which the airplane collided with trees and terrain.
Postaccident Examination
A postaccident examination of the engine assembly and its accessories revealed no evidence of a failure or malfunction that existed before the crash. The induction system and fuel system components sustained impact damage or were consumed by post-impact fire. Investigators found the fuel selector valve in the OFF position.
Pilot Statement
The pilot stated that he could not specifically recall moving the fuel selector valve to the OFF position after the impact. However, he noted that he had begun an aircraft securing procedure before being forced to evacuate due to leaking fuel and a subsequent fire.
