Accident Overview
The pilot was performing an aerial survey at an altitude between 500 and 1,000 feet above ground level. While initiating a turn to allow a passenger to photograph seagrass, the pilot noted a loss of altitude. He responded by advancing the throttle to increase power, but then observed that the engine had lost power. The subsequent forced landing resulted in the airplane striking trees in a wooded area, causing damage to the aircraft.
Post-Accident Examination
A post-accident examination of the airplane determined that the fuel tanks contained 6 to 7 gallons of fuel. No water or contamination was detected in the fuel system. The ambient temperature was 82°F and the dew point was 59°F. According to icing probability charts, these conditions were conducive to the formation of carburetor ice.
