Accident Summary
An airplane on a flight from Chico, California, to Eugene, Oregon, crashed approximately 29 miles south of its destination. The accident occurred after the aircraft's engine stopped, leading to an uncontrolled descent from about 100 feet above ground level.
Witness Accounts
Witnesses reported observing the aircraft turning toward a mown hay field. They noted that the engine was cutting out before the airplane abruptly dropped and impacted the ground.
Investigation Findings
Examination of the wreckage revealed that the right wing fuel tank was empty, and the left wing tank contained only a trace amount of fuel. Approximately one to two teaspoons of fuel were extracted from the remainder of the aircraft's fuel system. Both wing tanks were breached, but there was no fuel odor or discoloration of vegetation at the accident site, indicating a lack of fuel. Investigators found no evidence of mechanical malfunction. The pilot had overflown at least five suitable airports with fuel facilities along the route.
