Introduction
An airplane experienced an engine failure during a go-around maneuver and subsequently collided with terrain. The event occurred while the pilot was attempting to avoid powerlines. Post-accident inspection revealed a significant fuel imbalance between the two tanks.
Flight Details
Prior to departure, the airplane was fueled with 32.2 gallons of usable fuel. The flight was operating as the second leg of a cross-country journey. While on final approach, the pilot observed parachutists over the airport and decided to execute a go-around by applying power.
Incident
When the pilot applied power for the go-around, the engine did not respond. The airplane descended and struck the terrain during the pilot's effort to avoid nearby powerlines.
Wreckage Examination
Examination of the wreckage indicated that the left fuel tank, which was selected, contained approximately 20 ounces of fuel. The right fuel tank was found empty. No fuel was present in the carburetor, and there were no signs of fuel leakage at the accident site.
