Accident Overview
A student pilot conducting a crosswind landing experienced a sequence of events that resulted in the aircraft nosing over after a go-around. The wind was from the right side of the runway. The pilot intended to use the crab to slip method for the landing.
Approach and Drift
As the airplane approached the runway threshold, the pilot applied left rudder but neglected to apply right aileron. This caused the airplane to drift to the left side of the runway.
Go-Around and Stall
The pilot decided to execute a go-around and applied full power. After applying full power, he felt the airplane begin to sink. Shortly after pitching the airplane up, the airplane stalled.
Landing Gear Contact and Nose-Over
The main landing gear contacted the ground first, followed shortly by the nose gear. The pilot reported that the nose gear collapsed, and the airplane continued its landing roll. A short time later, the airplane nosed over.
Pilot's Training Background
The pilot recalled having received training in go-arounds. He remembered performing two go-arounds during dual instruction about six months before the accident. He also stated he had made two go-arounds during solo flight sessions, but could not recall when those occurred.
