Accident Overview
A pilot flying a tail-wheel equipped airplane experienced a loss of directional control during takeoff from a remote airport. The aircraft veered off the left side of the runway, resulting in the collapse of the right main landing gear and the right wing contacting the ground.
Pilot Report
The pilot reported that before departure, the wind was from the left quarter at about 25 knots, approximately 25 degrees left of the runway heading. During the takeoff roll, the pilot kept the airplane on the ground for about 1,100 feet, reaching an airspeed of 70 MPH. At that point, the airplane suddenly veered to the left and departed the runway surface.
Weather Conditions
After the accident, the pilot noted that the wind was blowing from the north at an estimated 25 knots. The Facility Directory for the airport included a caution for strong winds, severe turbulence, and possible wind shear.
