What happened
On September 25, 1997, at approximately 0939 central daylight time, Trans World Airlines flight 593, a McDonnell Douglas DC-9-83 (MD-83), aircraft N931TW, experienced a runway overrun at New Orleans International Airport (Moisant Field) in New Orleans, Louisiana. The flight had originated from St. Louis, Missouri, at approximately 0750.
The aircraft landed on runway 01 under visual meteorological conditions. During the landing roll, the airplane overran the departure end of the runway, causing the nose landing gear to become stuck in the mud. There was no damage to the aircraft and no emergency evacuation was required. All 130 passengers and five crewmembers were not injured. Following the overrun, passengers were deplaned and moved to the terminal via bus.
At the time of arrival, light rain had ceased, and the runway was classified as wet with good braking action. The flight crew reported that while braking action was initially good at the start of the landing roll, it became poor during the final portion of the roll.
