Incident Overview
A flight experienced a total loss of engine power after being airborne for 1 hour and 15 minutes. The pilot executed a forced landing in a field. During the landing, the aircraft struck a drainage ditch, causing the nose gear to collapse. The airplane subsequently nosed over and came to rest inverted.
Fuel System Examination
The aircraft had 43 gallons of fuel at the time of departure, and the fuel selector was found in the 'BOTH' position throughout the flight. Post-accident inspection revealed fuel present in the tanks. However, a crack was discovered in the fuel line between the fuel strainer, which is mounted on the firewall, and the engine fuel pump.
Cause of Power Loss
Evidence indicated that air entered the fuel system through the cracked line, leading to fuel starvation and subsequent engine power loss. The origin of the crack in the fuel line could not be determined.
Damage Summary
The aircraft sustained substantial damage due to the inverted resting position and the collapse of the nose gear.
